TBA loveliness

I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel! One of the children's books I'm working on is almost finished, just a few illustrations to get done and it's ready to go :) I feel like I should really do something to celebrate next week, January has been seriously an exhausting month for me work wise. 

But a busy weekend (especially if it's a cold and foggy one) would be just too dull without dreaming about pretty things and the TBA Spring collection is just the perfect thing for me today. Some of these pictures make me want to grab Little Women and read it again. Pastel colors, cute straw hats, pleats, lovely collars and a swan print... it couldn't be more adorable!

Finalmente riesco a vedere la luce in fondo al tunnel (Ary, Cécile, arrivo!), uno dei due libri ai quali sto lavorando e' quasi finito, ancora un paio di illustrazioni ed e' pronto per partire :) Credo che dovrei proprio trovare un modo per festeggiare una volta consegnato tutto, gennaio per me e' stato un mese a dir poco estenuante.

Ma un weekend passato a lavorare sarebbe davvero troppo noioso senza una sana pausa per sognare ad occhi aperti (specialmente se nel weekend in questione fa un freddo terribile e c'e' la nebbia!) e la collezione primaverile di TBA era proprio cio' di cui avevo bisogno oggi. Alcune di queste fotografie mi fanno venire voglia di tirar giu' Piccole Donne dallo scaffale e rileggerlo per l'ennesima volta. Colori pastello, cappelli intrecciati, abitini a pieghe, colletti deliziosi e una stampa coi cigni... questa collezione non poteva essere piu' adorabile di così!

This morning the sunshine was too beautiful to stay at home, so I ran away from work and enjoyed a lovely walk in town.

Of course now it's past midnight ad I'm still drawing, so this time I'll just let the photos do the talking ;)

Stamattina sono riuscita a strappare qualche ora al mio lavoro per fare una passeggiata in centro, la luce era splendida e non sarei proprio riuscita a rimanere in casa con una giornata così. 

Ovviamente ora e' mezzanotte passata e sto ancora disegnando, quindi per stavolta lascerò raccontare tutto alle fotografie :)

It's still quite cold here in Turin, but I am definitely ready to walk around wearing pastel colors and lovely prints (after I'll finish my books of course...) 

Here's a little selection of cute things I found here and there. 

I've seen lots of red in many spring collections, which is lovely, especially if paired with sailor stripes, but I guess peach and navy will always be my favorite.

Fa ancora molto freddo qui a Torino, ma io mi sento prontissima a gironzolare indossando colori pastello e tessuti dalle fantasie piu' adorabili (ovviamente dopo che avro' consegnato i miei libri...) 
Ecco una piccola selezione di abiti e accessori molto carini che ho trovato qua e la'. 
Ho trovato molto rosso nelle ultime collezioni primaverili, cosa che mi piace, soprattutto se e' abbinato a una mise un po' alla marinara, ma immagino che i miei colori preferiti per questa stagione rimarranno il pesca e il navy.

Ho deciso! Non posso continuare a fantasticare di comprarmi vestitini primaverili e gonnelline a pois quando nel mio guardaroba non c'e' piu' spazio nemmeno per il mio gatto (poverino)... Peggio ancora, se penso che molte cose le ho indossate solamente una volta o addirittura non le ho mai indossate (vergogna!)

Così ho pensato di iniziare a fare la brava fanciulla e ricorrere alla terapia d'urto :)

Orla Kiely - Spring Summer 2011

My plan for this sunday was waking up early, having a nice breakfast with Alf and a lovely walk outside, taking some pictures in a place we've never visited before and returning home right after lunch to finish my illustrations - deadlines are killing me! 
Well, I did wake up early and after I fed Julius I had a look out of the window... it was all grey and incredibly foggy, horrible! So since a David Lynch inspired shooting was not exactly what I had in mind, I decided to go straight back to bed and forget about it. When I woke up of course it all turned up sunny and beautiful, and now I have to stay home to work... :(
I thought that, instead of a grumpy silence, today I would have left my lovely readers at least something nice to see.

Il mio piano per questa domenica era: svegliarsi presto, colazione con Alf e una bella passeggiata fuori città, approfittando dell'occasione per fare qualche fotografia in un posto che non avevamo mai visitato prima. E poi tornare a casa subito dopo pranzo per finire delle illustrazioni che mi stanno uccidendo!
Dunque, mi sono svegliata presto e, subito dopo aver dato "la colazione" a Julius, ho dato un'occhiata fuori dalla finestra... era tutto grigio e la nebbia si tagliava a fette: orribile! Quindi, dal momento che una gita dentro un film di David Lynch non era esattamente cio' che immaginavo, mi sono girata e me ne sono tornata tristemente a letto. Quando mi sono risvegliata, ovviamente, fuori tutto si era trasformato: giornata soleggiata, uccellini che cinguettavano e io tappata in casa a lavorare... :(
Cosí ho pensato che, invece di un silenzio borbottoso, oggi vi avrei lasciato almeno qualcosa di carino da guardare. 

I guess my girl crush on Orla Kiely became quite obvious and her spring collection needs no introduction, I've been drooling on pretty much every single piece in it :)

My favorites: the navy jacket with red pockets that look like cut-out paper (utterly cute!), the blush polka dots dress with a peter pan collar, the striped handbag and that adorable navy romper with cream buttons.

Immagino che il mio debole per Orla Kiely ormai sia cosa nota qui e la sua collezione primaverile non necessiti di alcuna introduzione da parte mia, ho adorato praticamente tutto :)

I miei preferiti: la giacca blu navy con le tasche rosse che sembrano carta ritagliata (deliziose!), il vestito color cipria a piccoli pois, la borsa a righe e quell'adorabile abitino blu scuro coi bottoni e la cintura color crema.

On another note, I just wanted to say a very big thanks to the lovely Annie of ModCloth. She wrote a very nice post about how to style leopard print, featuring my New Year's outfit. Being a huge fan of ModCloth I was so excited when she told me, plus this blog is only 3 months old and it was the very first time I saw my face somewhere else ;)

Mentre sono qui, volevo dire un enorme grazie all'adorabile Annie di ModCloth. Qualche giorno fa ha scritto un post molto carino su come indossare il leopard print, e ha usato come ispirazione la mia mise di capodanno. Essendo una grande fan di ModCloth non potevo che esserne felice, in piu' questo blog ha solo tre mesi di vita ed era la prima volta che mi capitava di vedere la mia faccia in un posto che non fosse questo ;)

Etsy shop update - Purple sunnies

A very quick update to let you know that I just added these lovely 60s purple sunglasses to the Etsy shop!
It's been a mad busy week here with my illustration work, and the rest of the month won't be any better unfortunately... But if the weather keeps being sunny I might treat myself with a nice walk outside during the weekend, fingers crossed ;)

E' stata una settimana particolarmente impegnativa con le mie illustrazioni e il resto del mese non sara' da meno purtroppo... Ma se questo bel sole resiste ancora qualche giorno potrei concedermi una bella passeggiata rilassante durante il weekend, incrociamo le dita ;)

Pastels and polka dots - Max&co

When you enter a store during the sales determined like a valkyrie to find some brilliant deals, but in fact you exit with a pastel rose trench coat in your bag... well, it means that (other than not being a master in the art of smart shopping) you're seriously in need of spring :)
Don't get me wrong, I love winter for its beautiful atmosphere and because it's just so much fun layering clothes, but honestly I'm a little tired of this mad cold.
So I decided that from now on my imagination will be officially allowed to get rid of all those wool scarves and heavy coats to indulge its curiosity with light colors, tiny dots and sheer fabrics.

Quando entri in un negozio determinata come una valchiria per approfittare dei saldi invernali e invece te ne esci tutta contenta con un trench rosa pastello... beh, e' segno che (oltre a non avere ereditato il gene degli affari) il tuo bisogno di primavera e' ufficialmente disperato :)
Amo l'inverno per la sua atmosfera un po' magica e perche' e' così divertente indossare tanti vestiti uno sull'altro, ma in tutta onesta' di questo freddo non ne posso veramente piu'. 
Quindi ho deciso che da oggi almeno la mia fantasia potra' liberarsi da sciarponi di lana e capotti pesanti e perdersi tra colori tenui, piccoli pois e tessuti leggeri.

Last sunday, after a lovely walk at the vintage fair with Cécile, I had a peek at the Max&co spring collection and it was so so pretty! I swear I didn't buy anything, but some pieces have seriously caught my eye and I can tell by now that it will be quite hard for me to resist :)

Domenica scorsa, dopo aver curiosato con Cécile tra le bancarelle del Gran Balôn (il mercato dell'antiquariato che si tiene una volta al mese qui a Torino), ho fatto un salto da Max&co, il mio negozio del cuore. E ahime'.. mi sono dovuta scontrare con una terribile tentazione: la collezione primaverile! Giuro che non ho comprato nulla, ma il mio radar e' puntato e sara' molto, molto difficile resistere nei prossimi mesi :)

An Education

I spent my winter holidays in the laziest way possible and that gave me the chance to rewatch some of the movies I've been enjoying the most last year. One of those was "An Education". The story is nice and simple, it takes place in a 1960 London and, from the first frame of the opening titles to the very last scene, it's just a joy for the eye.

This movie's wardrobe is hugely inspiring, especially because it keeps a perfect balance between elegance and simplicity.

Le mie vacanze natalizie sono state meravigliosamente pigre e questo mi ha dato modo di poter riguardare alcuni dei film che piu' mi hanno colpita lo scorso anno. Uno di questi e' stato "An Education", la storia e' semplice e scorre piacevolmente, e' ambientata nella Londra degli anni '60 e, dal primo fotogramma dei titoli di testa all'ultima scena che chiude il racconto, e' una gioia per gli occhi. 

Il guardaroba in questo film per me e' un'immensa ispirazione, soprattutto perche' riesce a bilanciare perfettamente l'eleganza con la semplicità.

The school uniforms are so pretty, I love that tone of grey, the stripey scarfs and the little ties that hide behind a v-neck collar. I often wear this look in autumn with knee high socks and in winter with warm tights and a duffle coat.

Le divise scolastiche sono splendide, adoro quel punto di grigio, le sciarpe a righe e il cravattino che si nasconde sotto il collo a v. E' uno stile che uso spesso sia in autunno con calze al ginocchio, che durante l'inverno con collant spessi e un montgomery.

My favorite evening dress from the movie was Carey Mulligan's one, a very particular white piece with fitted bodice, full skirt and a red detail on the shoulder.

Tra gli abiti da sera, il mio preferito e' stato quello bianco di Carey Mulligan, tagliato in vita e impreziosito da un inserto rosso che passava dietro la spalla, molto fine.

I'm sure many of you recognized this floral dress. It's chic and practical at the same time, and those pastel colors are adorable. I'd love to find something similar to wear this spring.

Se avete visto la locandina del film, questo e' sicuramente un abito che conoscete. Il modello e' delizioso e pratico e quei colori così delicati sono un sogno. Mi piacerebbe molto trovarne uno simile per questa primavera.

And speaking of practical, here's some of Jenny's casual outfits featuring plaid pleated skirts, white blouses and simple cardigans. 
I really loved that the story ends with such an essential look: jeans folded at the bottom, flats and a navy sweater.

E sempre per restare in tema praticita', Jenny in versione casual con gonna a pieghe, una camicia bianca e un semplicissimo cardigan. 
Mi piace che la storia si concluda con un look così essenziale e spensierato: jeans con risvolti, ballerine e una maglia color navy.

"15 Things"

1 - I adore cats.
I don't think I would be able to imagine my life without a cat in the house, in fact I've always been living with them. Every cat has got its own very particular personality, they're extremely communicative (some of them even too much!), loving and so so funny.

1 - Adoro, adoro, adoro i gatti.

Credo che non riuscirei proprio a vivere serena senza un gatto che mi gironzoli per casa. Ne ho avuti tanti, ognuno ha la sua personalita', sono estremamente comunicativi (qualcuno pure troppo!), affettuosi e fanno morire dal ridere.

2 - I've been drawing since I can remember.
One of my favorite childhood pastimes was drawing tiny silly illustrations in sequence on a post-it cube, and then flipping to see them animating. Countless hours of fun. When someone asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up, my answer was always the same: making cartoons.
This drawing is marked 1986, I was 5 and as you can see I was already addicted to Alice in Wonderland (the wacky words you see are the lyrics from the movie, in italian).

2 - Disegno fin da quando arrivano i miei ricordi.

Uno dei passatempi preferiti della mia infanzia era creare piccole illustrazioni in successione sui post-it per poi farle scorrere in velocita' e guardarle in movimento. Quando mi chiedevano cosa volessi fare da grande, rispondevo convinta sempre la stessa cosa: fare i cartoni animati.

Questo disegno e' datato 1986, avevo 5 anni e come potete notare ero gia' in overdose da Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie.

3 - That dream came true :)
One of the feature films I've worked on, "The secret of Kells", received an Oscar nomination last year and I was lucky enough to fly to L.A. and breathe the surreal and sparkly atmosphere of the Academy Awards night. I am still very excited about it!

Uno dei lungometraggi a cui ho lavorato, "The secret of Kells", e' stato candidato agli Oscar lo scorso anno e per qualche giorno ho avuto la fortuna di respirare la surreale atmosfera hollywoodiana. Sono ancora gasatissima!

4 - I would never, EVER give up pasta!
I eat it every single day, either at lunch or dinner. If I don't, I admit that I get a little sad :) It has to be "al dente" and with the perfect quantity of salt in the water.

La mangio tutti i giorni, o a pranzo o a cena, e se la salto mi intristisco :) Deve essere al dente e guai se manca di sale!

5 - I've been living in Ireland for a few years.
Alf and I went to Dublin for a summer animation internship that was supposed to last two weeks. Then we've been asked to stay and work in the studio, so we moved there and here's how our adventure in the land of shamrocks (and pouring rain) started.
I took this picture during a trip to Donegal, 3 years ago.

5 - Ho vissuto diversi anni in Irlanda.

Io e Alf eravamo partiti per uno stage a Dublino che doveva durare solo due settimane, e invece poi ci e' stato offerto di restare a lavorare nello studio, abbiamo traslocato ed e' iniziata la nostra lunga avventura nella splendida terra dei quadrifogli (e dell'umidita' che ti entra nelle ossa).
Questa foto l'ho scattata a Donegal, tre anni fa.

6 - Other than a little splash of Baileys or Bicerín (a chocolate liqueur from Turin) that I add to my tiramisù, and a glass of wine on rare occasions, I don't use to drink alcohol.
During my irish years I tried so hard to like beer, but I guess I'm hopeless, it's just too bitter for me :)

6 - A parte il Baileys o il Bicerín al gianduiotto di Torino che aggiungo al mio tiramisù, e un sorso di vino che assaggio raramente, non bevo alcolici.

Durante la mia vita irlandese ho tentato (e hanno tentato) in tutti i modi di farmi piacere la birra, ma e' piu' forte di me, la trovo amarissima :)

7 - On the other hand, I am a huge tea enthusiast.
I love tea time. Biscuits, jam, chatting in front of a warm cup and a slice of cake... My favorite tea is earl grey with a hint of lemon and 2 teaspoons of sugar cane.

7 - Al contrario, sono una grande fan del té.

Adoro l'ora della merenda, le marmellate, i biscottini e le chiacchiere davanti a una tazza calda e a una buona fetta di torta. Il mio té preferito e' l'earl grey con un po' di limone e due cucchiaini di zucchero di canna.

8 - I don't have a driving licence.
I've never been interested in cars, never wished I could drive a Vespa when I was a teenager and the reason for all that is I am absolutely terrified of driving. I think I would be too clumsy, not to mention my ridiculously absent sense of direction, that would make it all even more embarrassing.... Result: yay Turin trams (and yay boyfriend's car)!

8 - Non ho la patente.

Non ho mai provato alcuna attrazione per le automobili, non ho mai avuto la fantasia di guidare una Vespa nemmeno quando ero una teenager e la spiegazione a tutto questo e' che ho il terrore di guidare. Credo che sarei perfettamente imbranata e il mio penoso senso dell'orientamento renderebbe solo le cose ancora piu' imbarazzanti... Risultato: evviva i tram di Torino (e il fidanzato con la macchina)!

9 - I know every line of every single Disney movie by heart.
When I was young I used to watch a couple of them every day, completely addicted (see point 2). Then I  turned 10 and my little sister was born... and I used to watch a couple of Disney movies a day with her too. I went to an animation college, and I kept watching them to study how they've been made... Yes, I still watch them today :)

9 - Conosco a memoria ogni battuta di tutti i film Disney.

Da piccola ne guardavo un paio al giorno, completamente drogata (vedi punto 2). Poi ho compiuto dieci anni ed e' nata la mia sorellina... e ho ripreso a guardarne un paio al giorno anche con lei. Poi ho iniziato a studiare cinema d'animazione, e ho continuato... Sì, li guardo ancora adesso :)

10 - I love old video games.
I was 8, I received an Amiga 500 as a birthday gift and I immediately became a little nerd. I know that saying this in a world where every single baby has got his own mobile phone may sound a little obvious, but in my case it was 1989 :) The video game I've loved the most was probably Rainbow Island, I can't even remember how many times I completed it, collecting all the diamonds in every island and unlocking the unlockable. Crazy little girl!
The Game Boy (the very first edition that was as big as a brick) was my second big crush.

10 - Adoro i vecchi videogames.

Quando avevo 8 anni mi e' stata regalata un'Amiga 500 e sono subito diventata una piccola nerd. Detto in un'era in cui ogni neonato ha un cellulare tutto suo, questa sembrera' una cosa assolutamente normale, ma nel mio caso era il 1989 :) Il gioco che piu' ho adorato e' stato probabilmente Rainbow Islands, non ricordo nemmeno quante volte lo abbia finito, collezionando tutti i diamanti in ogni isola e sbloccando ogni porta nascosta. Praticamente un'invasata!
Il Game Boy (prima edizione, quello grande piu' o meno quanto Il Cucchiaio d'Argento) e' stato il mio secondo compagno di avventure.

11 - I've got more makeup than I could use in a lifetime.
Maybe it's because I grew up surrounded by colors, brushes and art pigments, but makeup has always been a big attraction for me. I don't wear makeup every day, but I adore nail polishes.

Forse sara' perche' sono cresciuta circondata da colori, pennelli e pigmenti, ma i trucchi hanno su di me un effetto ipnotico. Non mi trucco tutti i giorni, ma adoro gli smalti.

12 - I would love to reborn in the 40s, be a teenager in the 50s and live my twenties in the 60s.

13 - I'm a sucker for coats and I probably have too many of them. I dream of wearing a Lilli Ann one, some day.

14 - I love Italy and living in Italy.
I've been travelling a lot in the past years and had the chance to visit lovely towns. But it's here that I feel myself truly, that I feel like home. The only place where I would love to stay for a while is San Francisco, I went there 3 years ago and it completely stole my heart.

Ho viaggiato molto negli ultimi anni, visitato luoghi meravigliosi e alla fine ho sentito che e' qui che sto bene ed e' qui che mi sento veramente a casa. L'unica citta' dove mi piacerebbe abitare per un po' di tempo e' San Francisco, ci sono stata tre anni fa e mi ha completamente rubato il cuore.

15 - When I sleep, I sleep really hard :) 
Nothing is loud enough to wake me up and I can easily sleep for 16 hours if I'm alone. In this picture Julius is giving his best too :)

15 - Quando dormo, non mi sveglia nemmeno un trapano dentro casa (e' successo sul serio) e sono in grado di dormire anche 16 ore di fila (e' successo spesso). Anche Julius qui si dà abbastanza da fare...

Happy New Year!

The last day of 2010 was pleasantly sunny and not too cold, so I thought it was perfect for taking some pictures before going to my little party. 

Whilst I love wearing red, reindeer sweaters and kitsch dresses on Christmas, on New Year's Eve I generally go for a more neutral palette, brightened by something sparkly or something curious. 

Since my evening was going to be on the cosy and relaxing side, I decided to put on my leopard print number, dressed down with a simple black cardigan and a camel coat.

Il 2010 si e' chiuso con una giornata serena e leggermente meno fredda del solito e così ne ho approfittato per scattare qualche fotografia prima di andare a festeggiare il capodanno con gli amici.

Mentre per Natale amo il rosso, i maglioni con le renne e gli abiti decisamente kitsch, per capodanno in genere preferisco colori piu' neutri, spezzati da un tocco di luce o da un dettaglio un po' bizzarro. Alla fine ho deciso di indossare il mio abito leopardato di Zara, addolcito da un cappotto color crema ed un semplice cardigan nero.

At some point a black cat joined me in the shoot :) I adore cats, I get all fuzzy inside when I see one and he was sooo lovely. Thank goodness Alf was there to stop me, otherwise I would have seriously risked to take him home!

A un certo punto un gattone tutto nero si e' intrufolato nelle mie foto :) Quando vedo un gatto io perdo la testa, lui era affettuossissimo e se non fosse stato per Alf avrei rischiato seriamente di portarmelo a casa!

This vintage key was a gift from Alf, I really love it and every time I look at it I find myself dreaming of which door it used to open and how that room looked like. 

The cat eye sunglasses belonged to his mother, a little treasure from the sixties.

Questa chiave antica e' un regalo di Alf, mi piace moltissimo e adoro perdere tempo a domandarmi quale porta aprisse e a chi appartenesse. 

Gli occhiali da sole invece erano della sua mamma, un piccolo tesoro degli anni '60. 

Even my makeup was very neutral: just a coat of red nail polish, eyeliner, a veil of gloss and there it is!

Prevedendo una serata estremamente "comoda", ho voluto lasciare molto semplice anche il trucco: smalto rosso, eyeliner, un po' di gloss e via!
