Pom Pom

It's still winter here in Turin, but I have to admit that when I saw that pink blossom branch I almost cried :)

Eventually, my perfectly lazy weekend I've been waiting for. I haven't touched one single pencil or crayon! Waking up late, a refreshing walk in town, sunday sweets, tea with my cat (really, I told you he's a curious, self-centered cat) and my best friend's birthday party.

E' ancora decisamente inverno qui a Torino, ma quel rametto fiorito ieri pomeriggio mi ha quasi commossa :)

Finalmente il weekend pigro e lento che tanto aspettavo, non ho toccato nemmeno una matita! Sveglia tardi, una passeggiata rigenerante, dolci domenicali, tè col mio gatto (sul serio, ve l'ho detto che ha manie di protagonismo) e la festa di compleanno della mia amica del cuore. 

 

I bought this necklace at the antique fair about ten years ago, I love its simple shape. 

I remember I've read somewhere that rutile quartz was used to manifest one's dreams. Well, last night I forgot to take my necklace off and I dreamt about a Max&co bag I saw last week at the shop. It must be a sign! :D

Ho comprato questo ciondolo a un mercatino d'antiquariato piu' di dieci anni fa, adoro la sua linea semplicissima. Ricordo di aver letto da qualche parte che il quarzo rutilato veniva usato per stimolare i sogni. Ieri notte ho dimenticato di togliere il ciondolo prima di andare a dormire e ho sognato una borsa di Max&co che ho visto la settimana scorsa in vetrina. Deve essere un segno! :D

I've been given this beautiful butterfly brooch when I was really young, so young that I don't remember who actually used to wear it before me! (mom, any ideas?)

It's always exciting to find things from your own past and give them a new life.

Questa spilla invece mi e' stata data quando ero molto piccola, talmente piccola da non ricordare nemmeno a chi appartenesse prima! (mamma, tu ne sai nulla?)

E' sempre emozionante ritrovare oggetti appartenenti al proprio passato e potergli dare una nuova vita. 

I've been waiting to wear this TBA pom pom dress for so long. My lovely friend Genevieve knew how much I loved it and, when she noticed that it was thrown in the UO sale section, she wrote me immediately. I ordered it the very same day :) Then, of course, the usual bad luck when it comes to parcels shipped during snowy holidays... long story short, it was lost for weeks (in another town of course) but thanks to my detective abilities I got to find it and had it delivered to my address! Phew.

Dire che questo abito di TBA mi abbia fatta penare e' poco. La mia amica Genevieve sapeva quanto lo desiderassi e appena scoprí che era in saldo sul sito di Urban Outfitters mi scrisse immediatamente. Lo ordinai quello stesso giorno :) Purtroppo avrei dovuto considerare la solita sfortuna che si abbatte sui pacchi spediti durante le tormente di neve... per farla breve e' andato perso, sparita ogni sua traccia per settimane finche', grazie alle mie abilita' di detective, sono riuscita a ritrovarlo (in un'altra citta' ovviamente) e farmelo rispedire a casa! Tutto e' bene quel che finisce bene.

Fun Trench Coats

The trench coat has definitely become a classic of a lady's wardrobe. It's easy to wear as it goes pretty much with everything, it sustained itself through many decades and even though it was born as the English army raincoat it's incredibly feminine. But it doesn't have to be necessary beige, or blue or khaki :) These patterns with apples, birds, flowers or polka dots are so pretty and I think they would be also the best way to give some fun and color to any rainy day!

Il trench e' uno dei capi che non mancano praticamente mai nel guardaroba di una fanciulla, e' versatile, dagli anni '40 non e' mai passato di moda e, pur nascendo come impermeabile dell'esercito inglese, e' incredibilmente femminile. Ma chi ha detto che debba per forza essere beige, o blu, o color khaki? :) Questi pattern sono deliziosi e, che siano fiori, rondini, mele o pois, trovo siano anche il modo migliore per dare colore a qualsiasi giorno di pioggia!

These are just two of the pretty things I added to my Ebay shop. Coats and jackets to stay warm in the last weeks of winter! It's hard to take pictures with a white background on the table when you have a curious cat stealing the scene...

Queste sono solo un paio delle cosine che ho aggiunto all'Ebay shop. Cappotti, giacche e giubbottini per resistere alle ultime settimane di freddo! Certo non e' facile fare delle fotografie con uno sfondo bianco sul tavolo quando hai un gatto con manie di protagonismo...

Ruche's sweet season

I always enjoy a nicely styled lookbook with a romantic atmosphere, especially when the clothes are equally lovely. I feel like I could wear these Ruche pieces (love that cutout pale blue skirt!) every single day this spring. 

And this country feel to them makes me want to go for a field trip very soon, fingers crossed for a sunny weekend!

Apprezzo sempre moltissimo quando il lookbook di una collezione e' tanto grazioso quanto lo sono poi effettivamente gli abiti. Potrei indossare queste gonne traforate e bluse floreali di Ruche ogni singolo giorno di primavera. 

E quell'atmosfera di campagna non fa altro che farmi desiderare una piccola gita fuori citta' molto presto, incrociamo le dita per un weekend di sole!

Over the last couple of weeks many of you lovely readers emailed me asking about the meaning of my blog's name, since it's an italian word. Let's solve the mystery then! There are basically two reasons why I picked it, and both are related to my more personal 'world', that is animation.

Nelle ultime settimane molte di voi mi hanno scritto chiedendomi se il nome di questo blog avesse qualche significato particolare, allora sveliamo il mistero! I motivi che mi hanno portata a scegliere questo nome sono due e sono entrambi legati al mio mondo piu' personale, quello dell'animazione.

Rosaspina (the equivalent of "Briar Rose") is the main character of a very well known 50s animated feature film, a beautiful sixteen years old peasant girl raised in a secret cottage, who spent her days gathering berries and singing in the woods, surrounded by squirrels and birds. Probably better known as princess Aurora.
Sleeping Beauty has been my 'crucial' film, it's the very first animated movie I saw. Even if I was incredibly young I still remember that day very clearly, as I watched it 12 times in a row and mom was quite embarrassed when we gave the tape back to the rental shop... :) Who would have guessed that one day I'd work as an animator? Probably anyone who found me completely astonished in front of the tv that day.
Other than a dear memory from my childhood, Sleeping Beauty is also considered a true art masterpiece by basically everyone who is in animation. It's like an incredibly detailed medieval oil painting in motion, and each and every frame is just pure perfection. The fact that it took almost ten years of hard work to see the light of day shouldn't come as a big surprise :)

Rosaspina e' la contadinella protagonista di un lungometraggio degli anni '50 molto noto, una splendida fanciulla con i capelli color dell'oro che trascorreva le sue giornate raccogliendo bacche nel bosco e cantando come un usignolo circondata da animaletti. Meglio conosciuta forse come la principessa Aurora.
La Bella Addormentata nel Bosco e' stata una svolta nella mia vita, e' stato il primo cartone animato che abbia visto. Ero piccolissima ma mi ricordo quel giorno come se fosse ieri, perche' avevo guardato il film a ripetizione ben 12 volte e la mamma era molto imbarazzata quando riportammo la cassetta al videonoleggio... Chi l'avrebbe detto che sarei finita a lavorare proprio in quel mondo? Piu' o meno chiunque mi avesse vista quel giorno con la faccia imbambolata davanti allo schermo. 
Al di la' dei ricordi di infanzia, La Bella Addormentata nel Bosco e' considerata da chiunque lavori nell'animazione un capolavoro dell'arte, e non solo quella cinematografica. E' come un articolato dipinto ad olio medievale, ricchissimo di dettagli, ma in movimento e ogni fotogramma e' sempre assolutamente perfetto. Non c'e' da stupirsi che abbia impiegato circa dieci anni di lavoro per venire alla luce :)

Rosaspina is also the name of a vintage shop that appears in my graduation film. It's a 7 minutes film that I made with my two friends Alice and Simona at school several years ago, it's called 'Marla'. We took care of every step in the production, from script to storyboard, direction, animation and coloring. I don't intend to bother you posting the entire film here (I haven't watched it in years myself), so I'll just leave you with a few links: here you can find the video and here the work in progress. Rosaspina e' anche il nome che io e le mie compagne di corso Alice e Simona abbiamo dato a un negozio vintage che appare nel nostro film di tesi. E' un film animato di circa 7 minuti che abbiamo realizzato diversi anni fa, dal titolo 'Marla'. Insieme abbiamo curato tutte le fasi della produzione, dalla sceneggiatura allo storyboard, alla regia, alle animazioni e alla coloritura. Non voglio tediarvi postando qui il film intero che, tra l'altro, io non riesco neanche piu' a guardare (come spesso accade con le cose a cui si dedica troppo tempo e alle cose che non si rifarebbero piu' allo stesso modo), quindi vi lascio un po' di link: qui trovate il video e qui il work in progress. How can you brighten up a dull day of work, when you can't even dream looking out of your window because the sky is awfully grey? With presents! Possibly pastel colored ones ;)

Come si fa a dare un po' di luce a una noiosa giornata di lavoro, quando non puoi nemmeno fantasticare guardando fuori dalla finestra perche' il cielo e' orribilmente grigio? Con dei regali! Possibilmente dai colori pastello :)

Quando stamattina il postino ha suonato al campanello ero felicissima, non vedo l'ora che torni il sole per poter indossare queste due meraviglie.

I guess I'm not really a Valentine's day type of gal, but a little bit of sweetness for the eyes of course never hurts ;)
When I stumbled upon the new Twigs & Honey lookbook the other day, I was completely smitten. Myra Callan's boutique sells beautifully handcrafted adornments that range from headbands with painted silk flowers to hand sewn embellished everyday jewelry, retro bridal veils and even a handmade eau de perfume called Rumpledcake created with natural ingredients.
The lookbook has a simple and sweet styling, features gorgeous sheer dresses, fine silks, feathers, laces and vintage bits that make her creations exquisitely unique.

Nonostante io non sia esattamente la tipica fanciulla "da San Valentino", un po' di sano romanticismo per gli occhi non guasta mai ;)
Quando qualche sera fa mi e' capitato per caso sotto gli occhi il nuovo lookbook di Twigs & Honey, sono rimasta piacevolmente colpita. La boutique di Myra Callan propone splendidi accessori realizzati a mano che vanno da fasce per capelli decorate con fiori di seta dipinti, a gioielli per occasioni speciali o per tutti i giorni, veli da sposa dal gusto retro' e addirittura un eau de parfume fatto in casa chiamato Rumpledcake, creato utilizzando solamente ingredienti naturali.
Lo styling delle fotografie del lookbook e' semplice e un po' nostalgico. Io trovo quegli abiti di seta leggeri assolutamente meravigliosi e i dettagli di tessuti, piume e pizzi vintage rendono ogni creazione unica e irripetibile.

Maybe for someone these accessories might appear "too bridal", but I can easily imagine pairing one of those pretty floral headbands with a pastel colored spring dress, oxfords and a vintage necklace. Like in this video from The honey trees that I just discovered!

Forse per qualcuno questi accessori potrebbero apparire un po' troppo "da cerimonia", ma io riesco facilmente a immaginare di abbinare uno di quei cerchietti floreali a un abito di cotone color pastello, un paio di comode oxford e un ciondolo vintage. Come in questo video di The honey trees che ho appena scovato!

How's everyone spending Valentine's Day? I'm starting on a new animation job today, so not a very romantic plan, but I guess that tonight I'll be very pleased to enjoy a relaxing dinner with Alf in some nice restaurant!

Kirsten Dunst for Band of Outsiders

When I saw these polaroid shots from the Band of Outsiders collection 'Boy', I was sure that they would have spread like wild fire through the blogging world, and in fact they did. But they're so gorgeous that I simply couldn't resist sharing them here as well, especially because of my huge girl crush on Kirsten Dunst. You could put even a mail canvas bag on her and she would always look effortlessly beautiful.

Quando ho visto queste immagini della collezione 'Boy' di Band of Outsiders, ero certa che in brevissimo tempo si sarebbero diffuse come un fuoco alimentato dal vento, e infatti così e' stato. Ma sono talmente belle che non ho potuto fare a meno di condividerle con voi, soprattutto per via della mia immensa adorazione per Kirsten Dunst. Le si potrebbe mettere addosso anche un sacco della posta e riuscirebbe comunque ad apparire stupenda.

The ruins, the forest and the old town

After a whole month spent at home, it was really time to get back to the good habits! So last sunday Alf and I jumped in the car and headed towards a new place to explore. This time we chose Avigliana, a lovely town to the west of Turin in the Susa Valley, surrounded by its two lakes and the Alps.

Dopo un gennaio trascorso tappata in casa, era proprio il momento di riprendere le buone vecchie abitudini. Così domenica pomeriggio io e Alf siamo saltati in macchina e ci siamo diretti verso una nuova meta da esplorare. Abbiamo scelto Avigliana, un grazioso paese della Val di Susa poco lontano da Torino, circondato dai suoi due laghi e dalle Alpi.    

Avigliana is a little medieval jewel, overlooked by the ruins of a 10th century castle. The feeling of walking in such an old place, touching stones that were already there in 983 was unbelievable! 

We were lucky enough to arrive there just before the sunset, the view from the top of the hill on the countryside and the mountains was so charming.

Avigliana e' un piccolo gioiellino medievale ed e' osservata dall'alto dalle rovine di un castello del X secolo. E' impressionante camminare in un luogo che esisteva piu' di mille anni fa, quelle pietre stavano lì dal 983! La vista da lassu' e' mozzafiato e noi abbiamo avuto la fortuna di arrivare poco prima che tramontasse il sole, uno spettacolo incantevole.

We walked through a path on the woods to reach the ruins of the castle up the hill. The rocks were all covered by beautifully colored moss and there were ivy branches everywhere.

Per raggiungere le rovine del castello abbiamo fatto una piccola passeggiata su per la collina attraverso un sentiero, la parete di roccia era completamente ricoperta di muschio e l'edera si arrampicava ovunque. I colori erano veramente incredibili!

And this was the old town: narrow lanes between houses, pointed arch windows, cobble stone streets,  small staircases to go from one level of the town to the next and the most peaceful silence. It was really if we were back in time.

E questa era la parte antica della citta': casette basse con tetti spioventi divise da stradine strette, scale di pietra, finestre ad arco acuto e un silenzio meraviglioso. Sembrava davvero di essere nel medioevo.

Pretty women

Hello there! It's been a little quiet here this week, I finally finished my book ending up with no energies left and I've been basically sleeping for 4 days straight ;) 

Everything is back to normal now and, as I promised myself, I celebrated with a little fashion-related treat that I will show you soon and with a lovely tea time with Cécile and Arianna.

I was thinking that maybe it would be nice to share a bit of my world on this blog and introduce you lovely readers to some of the artists that I love and who have been a strong influence on my work over the years.

Tadahiro Uesugi is one of my favorite japanese illustrators ever. I stumbled upon his website a long time ago, when I was working on my graduation film and since then he's always been a huge inspiration to me.

His characters are often gorgeous gals walking with their pretty handbags, whether in Japan or some lovely european towns. I adore his use of color and texture, he's got a a brilliant and poetic sense of composition and the lighting always adds a beautiful touch to his shots. 

He's been illustrating for several fashion magazines - Vogue and Cosmopolitan just to name a few - book covers, advertising and movie posters and last year he won an Annie Award (the highest honor given for excellence in animation) for his work as a production designer on the feature film "Coraline". 

This is only a tiny selection of my favorite pieces, but you can find an incredible amount of stunning illustrations on his website.

Sono uscita dal tunnel, evviva! E' stata una settimana un po' silenziosa da queste parti, ho finalmente finito il mio libro illustrato e con esso anche le mie energie, così per recuperare ho dormito per qualcosa come quattro giorni di fila :)

Tutto e' tornato alla normalita' per fortuna e, come mi ero ripromessa, oggi ho festeggiato con un regalino che presto vi mostrero' e una merenda in centro con le deliziose Cécile e Arianna.

Ho pensato che forse sarebbe stato carino condividere con voi un po' del mio mondo, degli artisti che amo e che hanno avuto molta influenza sul mio lavoro nel corso degli anni.

Tadahiro Uesugi e' uno degli illustratori giapponesi che piu' stimo in assoluto. Il suo portfolio meraviglioso mi e' passato sotto gli occhi durante la realizzazione del mio film di tesi e da allora e' sempre stato per me un'enorme fonte di ispirazione.

I suoi personaggi sono spesso splendide fanciulle che passeggiano per la citta' con le loro borsette perfette, a volte in Giappone, altre volte in bellissime localita' europee. Adoro l'uso che fa del colore e delle texture, ha uno spiccato e poetico senso della composizione e i suoi giochi di luce ed ombre sono una componente incredibilmente suggestiva nelle sue illustrazioni.

Uesugi ha lavorato per diverse riviste di moda - tra cui Vogue e Cosmopolitan, per nominarne un paio - copertine di libri, poster pubblicitari, locandine di film e l'anno scorso gli e' stato conferito un Annie Award (il piu'alto riconoscimento cinematografico dedicato all'animazione) per il suo lavoro come production designer nel lungometraggio "Coraline".
