How I miss my lazy weekends, soaking up the sun and taking pictures in the forest! This past weeks have been really MAD work wise with my illustration book, the animation job and my lectures at school... But even if I can't leave my desk right now, I found a way to post a little "outfit" pic anyway ;) 

Before getting back to my drawings, I just wanted to say thanks so so much for all your sweet messages about my new teaching experience. After the first few minutes of panic it went really well and standing in front of all those people eager to learn from you is such an incredible feeling :)

Quanto mi mancano i miei pigri weekend passati sotto il sole a fare fotografie in giro per boschetti! Queste ultime settimane sono state a dir poco tremende dal punto di vista del lavoro, sgomitando tra il mio libro illustrato, il lavoro di storyboard e le lezioni a scuola... Ma anche se in questi giorni mi trovo irrimediabilmente incollata alla scrivania, ho trovato lo stesso un modo per condividere una piccola immagine "outfittosa" ;)
Prima di riprendere la matita in mano, volevo ringraziarvi una per una per i messaggi carinissimi che mi avete scritto per darmi coraggio nella mia prima esperienza come insegnante. Dopo i primi minuti di panico, la lezione e' andata splendidamente e stare davanti a tante persone impazienti di imparare e interessate a cio' che dici e' una sensazione indescrivibile :)
Scappo, passate un buon weekend anche per me!

Vintage ladies: back to school

So, looks like tomorrow is the big day... I'm going to be a teacher for the first time in my life! The animation school where I graduated *a few years* ago asked me to do a series of lectures on storyboard and storytelling. Needless to mention that it is a huge honor for me and I feel so excited, but of course right now I can't do anything else but panicking about how to handle the situation of me-speaking-in-front-of-an-audience. Too many things to say and no clue where to start from :) 

I hope that after the few scary minutes I'll manage to feel at least half as confident as these pretty ladies.

In the worst case I'll take Julius with me and do an extensive lecture on long fur cats.

Ok, sembra proprio che sia arrivato il grande giorno... Domattina saro' un'insegnante per la prima volta nella mia vita! La scuola di cinema in cui mi sono diplomata *qualche anno* fa mi ha proposto di tenere una serie di lezioni su Storyboard e tecniche di racconto cinematografico. Inutile dire che questo per me e' stato un onore immenso e mi sento anche molto gasata, ma ovviamente l'unica cosa che riesco a fare in questo momento e' impanicarmi pensando a come gestire la situazione me-che-parlo-davanti-a-un-pubblico. Tantissime cose da dire e non so proprio da dove cominciare :)

Spero che dopo i primi minuti da tachicardia i pensieri si rimetteranno a posto e riusciro' a sentirmi sicura come queste graziose signorine.

Nel peggiore dei casi mi portero' Julius e terro' un seminario approfondito sui gatti a pelo lungo.

Orla Kiely - Autumn/Winter 2011

I don't know how's the weather treating you, but here in Turin it feels something like October! And other than the pouring rain, it's kind of chilly too... I just can't believe I'm back to layering cardigans over my dresses :( So today I'll make an exception to my little rule of "not showing next season collections" and share with you something that I could actually wear in these autumnal days!

Non so come sia il tempo da voi, ma qui da un paio di settimane e' praticamente e incessantemente Ottobre! Non riesco a credere di essere tornata a indossare i cardigan sopra gli abiti... :( Quindi oggi faro' un'eccezione alla mia piccola "regola del non correre con le stagioni" e vi mostrero' qualcosa che si intoni a questi giorni freddi e piovosi!

The first pictures I've been looking for during London Fashion Week were definitely the ones from Orla Kiely's collection, and as always I fell in love with them. My lovely friend Genevieve, who adores the irish designer as much as I do, yesterday morning shared with me the lookbook video, which for some reason I had missed! How could that happen? :D The Gia Coppola film stole my heart this spring and sometimes I rewatch it day dreaming of my London trip in august, but this one, directed by the visual artist Mercedes Helnwein, is absolutely charming: the collection is inspired by Hitchcock's "The Birds" and features Sixties shapes, ladylike collars, bows and retro patterns. Here's my favorites!

Le prime foto che sono andata a cercare sul web durante la Fashion Week di Londra sono state quelle della collezione autunnale di Orla Kiely, e come ogni volta sono rimasta estasiata. La mia amica Genevieve, che come me e' una sua devotissima adepta, ieri mattina mi ha mandato il video del lookbook che, per qualche ignota ragione, non avevo ancora visto! Come e' potuto succedere? :D Il film di Gia Coppola questa primavera ha fatto breccia nel mio cuore e ogni tanto lo riguardo fantasticando del mio viaggetto a Londra ad agosto, ma questo film, diretto dalla visual artist Mercedes Helnwein, e' altrettanto interessante: la collezione, ispirata al film "Gli Uccelli" di Hitchcock, e' un concentrato di silhouette anni '60, colletti da signorina per bene, fiocchi e texture retro'. Ecco i miei preferiti!

Reading your comments from my previous post, it would seem that we all agree on one fact: in the past, the beach was undoubtably a more gracious looking place than today (and I won't add any further comment to it!)

Fortunately, very often trends come from real people, rather than from the fashion industry itself, so my darlings, let's spread some good taste this summer!

A giudicare dai commenti che ha generato il post precedente (vi ho adorate!) sembrerebbe che siamo tutte d'accordo su un fatto: le spiagge di una volta erano oggettivamente e indiscutibilmente piu' graziose alla vista di quello che sono le spiagge oggi, per le quali non aggiungero' ulteriori commenti :)

Spesso, per fortuna, i trend nascono piu' dalle persone, che dall'industria dell'alta moda, quindi mie care fanciulle, non ci resta che trasmettere noi un po' di buon gusto quest'estate!

Vintage ladies: on the beach

Well, after writing this post I can say that I definitely switched to summer mode! I challenged the rain of these last few days buying a new bathing suit (if you're allowed to call "new" a one-piece bathing suit from 1952), booking the train ticket for my vacation in the south and, even though I have a ton of work to get done before that, daydreaming of a lazy walk on the beach, with huge sunnies on, a straw hat and a glass of iced tea.

Con questo post dichiaro di essere ormai completamente passata in modalita' estate! Ho sfidato la pioggia di questi ultimi giorni e ho comprato un costume nuovo (se "nuovo" si possa mai definire un costume intero del '52), prenotato il biglietto del treno per la vacanza in Salento e nonostante abbia una montagna di lavoro da finire prima di allora, non riesco a fare a meno di distrarmi, immaginandomi sotto il sole cocente, passeggiando sulla sabbia con degli enormi occhiali da sole, un cappello di paglia e un bicchiere di Estathè con la cannuccia.

And with this state of mind today I spent a few hours browsing through old pictures found somewhere in my laptop... I will never get tired of admiring the elegance of these ladies from the past who (other than wearing wonderful swimsuits) were blessed with a simple yet sensual beauty, happily aware of their own gorgeous curves and incredibly graceful.

Ed e' con questo stato d'animo che oggi ho trascorso qualche ora riguardando vecchie fotografie senza nome che giacevano nel mio portatile... non mi stanchero' mai di ammirare lo splendore di queste donne del passato che (oltre ad indossare dei costumi meravigliosi) erano dotate di una bellezza semplice e sensualissima, di forme "vere" portate con un'incredibile grazia e consapevolezza della propria femminilita'.

A little secret

Sometimes, while rambling about pretty clothes, I also happen to mention my work as an illustrator and animator, and I know I promised to show you something here eventually :) Most of the times when you work on a project you are not allowed to show anything until it sees the light of day... which means that you keep it secret for a very long time. And when you are in the middle of a deadline (or two, or three in my case) you don't really have the time to work on your personal projects. Let's say that basically when you drop your pencil at the end of the day, you just want to sink in the couch and think about something completely different. Like floral dresses and vintage collars! However, it's been a while that I am cooking up an idea, a little surprise that finally puts drawing and my sartorial flights of fancy together. 

I won't reveal anything else for now, but consider this quick sketch as a first hint ;)

A volte, scrivendo di graziosi vestiti, vi ho anche raccontato un po' del mio lavoro di illustratrice e animatrice e vi avevo promesso che, prima o poi, vi avrei anche mostrato qualcosa :) La maggior parte delle volte cio' a cui si sta lavorando e' protetto da un segreto, che non puo' essere svelato fino a quando il libro, o il film, non vede la luce del sole... e cio' si traduce in tempi lunghissimi. Quando poi si e' con l'acqua alla gola per piu' commissioni che si accavallano (nel mio caso, sempre) non si ha il tempo materiale di dedicarsi a progetti personali o, piu' semplicemente, quando la sera lasci cadere la matita hai solo voglia di sprofondare nel divano e pensare a tutt'altro. Come per esempio abitini a fiori e colletti vintage! E' un po' di tempo pero' che un'idea mi frulla per la testa, una piccola sorpresa per voi che finalmente accomuna le mie frivolezze sartoriali con il disegno. 

Non vi svelero' altro, ma considerate questo schizzo a matita come un primo suggerimento ;)
